Gel Documentation System

A gel documentation system (gel doc) is a laboratory instrument used to visualize, capture, and analyze stained DNA, RNA, and protein bands following gel electrophoresis or membrane blotting.

Core Components

Light Source: Uses UV, blue LED, or white light transillumination to excite fluorescent or colorimetric dyes in the gel.

Casing / Hood: Blocks external ambient light and protects the operator from UV radiation.

Camera / Detector: Employs a high-resolution digital or CCD camera to record images of the separated molecules.

Analysis Software: Measures molecular weight, band intensity, and relative concentrations for quantitative data processing.

Main Applications

Nucleic Acid Analysis: Imaging DNA and RNA fragments stained with ethidium bromide, SYBR Safe, or similar dyes.

Protein Analysis: Documenting protein gels stained with Coomassie Blue, silver stain, or fluorescent markers.

Gel Excision: Allowing safe cutting of DNA or RNA bands directly from the gel tray using a UV or blue-light shield.
