CO₂ Incubator
A CO₂ incubator is a precision-engineered laboratory chamber designed to cultivate and maintain biological cultures, particularly mammalian cell and tissue cultures, by replicating physiological conditions. By tightly regulating the intersection of temperature, carbon dioxide concentration, and humidity, it creates an optimized, sterile microenvironment crucial for in vitro cellular growth and research.
Key Functions & Technical Specifications
- Temperature Regulation: Typically maintains a constant 37°C (matching human body temperature) using direct heat or water-jacketed systems to ensure thermal uniformity and stability.
- CO₂ & pH Control: Continuously infuses and monitors carbon dioxide levels (usually at 5% to 10%). The gas interacts with the bicarbonate buffering system of the cell culture media to maintain a stable, life-supporting pH level between 7.2 and 7.4.
- Humidity Maintenance: Sustains high relative humidity levels (≥95%) using a water reservoir or pan to prevent the evaporation of culture media and protect cells from desiccation.
- Contamination Defense: Integrates advanced containment features such as HEPA filters, copper-enriched interiors, and high-temperature decontamination cycles to safeguard delicate specimens.
- Sensors and Automation: Utilizes highly responsive Infrared (IR) sensors or thermal conductivity (TC) sensors to manage rapid gas recovery times following door openings.
Primary Applications
- Cell & Tissue Culture: Routine cultivation of primary tissues, oncology lines, and mammalian cells.
- Clinical Protocols: Critical procedures in In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), oocyte preparation, and stem cell engineering.
- Biomedical Research: Essential for immunology, genetic engineering, virology, and pharmaceutical drug development.
